SABC is South Africa’s public broadcaster. Operating 6 television channels and 19 radio stations, it is one of the largest state-owned enterprises in SA.
SABC Sport is their popular free-to-air 24 hour sports channel, offering a range of coverage including live events, news and highlights.
SABC Sport’s website was very basic and failed to meet the expectations of their users who were accustomed to their high quality broadcast coverage. They wanted an online presence that could support the channel with engaging, interactive content whilst providing a delightful experience for their audience.
We worked with key stakeholders from across SABC from the project’s inception, creating requirements. concepts and solutions that ensured the needs of the user and the organisation were not only met, but exceeded.
Taking a mobile first approach, we created media-rich designs that provided in-depth coverage of South Africa’s most popular sports; Football, Rugby and Cricket.
As well as up-to-the-minute news coverage and live blogs, we also designed solutions for live scores & stats, video & streaming, podcasts, radio and live TV.
When developing such data-heavy areas of the site, performance was a priority. We worked closely with developers and end users throughout, iterating on designs to ensure we provided an appropriate experience that took into account the challenges of SA’s mobile network coverage.
